Waffles the Corgi Puppy Decided the Ribbon Was the Best Part of the Gift

AI imagecorgichristmasribbon

Everything about this Corgi puppy is mid-pounce. One front paw is stretched out and pinning a long red ribbon to the carpet, his tongue is just peeking out, and his big soft ears flop to the sides. His sable coat looks like warm toast, and the little white patch on his chest makes him look like he got dressed up for the occasion.

The wrapping paper that held the ribbon lies crumpled beside him, a plain brown bag with a few scraps of white tissue still inside. Behind him, a tree sits out of focus beside a couch, and a pair of slippers waits near a window with winter light pouring in. This is Waffles, and the best part of any gift, in his opinion, is the string.

Puppies learn by pouncing, and a ribbon is a perfect moving target. It is also a good reminder that ribbons, yarn, and string are among the items vets warn about most, because a dog that swallows a long strand can end up with a serious blockage. Play with ribbon only while you hold the other end, then put it away. Corgis are smart, active herding dogs, and they love games that keep their brains busy, such as tug with a proper toy, hide and seek, and simple training tricks. Their long backs mean it is wise to avoid too much jumping off furniture. Talk to your vet if you are unsure what is best for your puppy's growth.

Waffles will tire himself out soon. Until then, the red ribbon doesn't stand a chance.
