A Boston Terrier Puppy Sits Very Still on the Frosted Porch Steps

AI imageboston terriersnowporch

Snow has settled on the porch steps, and a black and white Boston Terrier puppy sits right in the middle of the dusting. His big ears are pricked, his dark round eyes are looking off to the side, and his little white chest is spotless against the winter scene. Pine garland laced with pinecones curves around the railing beside him, a few flakes still clinging to the needles.

Everything is quiet. The siding is soft cream, the door behind him is dark, and a few fallen leaves peek through the snow at the edge of the steps. We'll call him Domino, which suits the markings. He has the careful posture of a puppy who has been told to wait, and is waiting, mostly.

Boston Terriers are small, friendly dogs, often called the American Gentleman because of their tuxedo-like coats. They tend to be affectionate and playful, and they usually do best as indoor companions. Their short coat and short nose make them less comfortable in extreme weather, so cold days call for brief outings, and a sweater can help. Short-nosed breeds can also have trouble in heat, so watch for heavy breathing in any extreme temperature. Steps in winter can be slippery, so help a small puppy up and down, and wipe his paws after he comes inside to remove ice and any de-icing salt. Your vet can help you with the right care for his face and eyes.

Domino stays on his step, a tiny doorman in a frosted garland, waiting for the door to open.
