The Milk Jug Fell Over All by Itself. At Least, That's Her Story.
Right in the center of a splattered white puddle sits a calico with an expression of mild apology. A plastic milk jug lies on its side behind her, still dribbling, and the spill has spread in every direction across the tile floor. A rumpled blue towel lies nearby, as if someone already gave up on mopping. Her white paws are soaked, her ears are tipped back slightly, and those green eyes are looking up with the kind of face that says, it just fell over by itself.
Calico is a color pattern, not a breed, made up of white with patches of orange and black. Because the genes for orange and black coat color are carried on the X chromosome, nearly all calicos are female. Male calicos do exist but are rare. Many people associate calicos with spirited, sassy personalities, though temperament really depends on the individual cat. On the milk question, the classic image of a cat lapping up a saucer of milk is a bit misleading. Many adult cats have trouble digesting lactose and can end up with an upset stomach. Fresh water is the best drink, and if you want to offer something special, ask your vet about cat-safe options.
There is no use crying over spilled milk, as the saying goes. A mop, a towel for those paws, and a gentle reminder about counter etiquette, and everyone can move on with their day.
