It Looked Like Snow Fell in the Living Room. It Wasn't Snow.

It looks a little like a snowstorm blew through the living room. White fluff is piled up on the carpet, drifting off the edge of a grey couch, and mixed with torn strips of tan fabric. Lying in the center of it all, front paws stretched out neatly, is a cream point Ragdoll with soft blue eyes and a tiny, pleased little smile. The couch cushion behind her has a large and very obvious hole. She does not seem troubled by it in the slightest.

Scratching is a natural and necessary behavior for cats. It keeps their claws in good shape, stretches the muscles of the back and shoulders, and leaves scent marks from glands in the paws. When a cat chooses the couch, it is usually because the couch is in a prominent spot and has a satisfying texture. The best fix is to offer alternatives right next to the furniture: a tall, sturdy scratching post that does not wobble, or a horizontal scratcher for cats who prefer to dig. Rewarding the cat with praise or treats when she uses the post helps a lot. Regular nail trims and double-sided tape on the favorite corner of the couch can also discourage repeat performances.

To be fair, the couch did look very comfortable before she rearranged it. Now it is just extra comfortable, at least from a Ragdoll's point of view, and she is clearly enjoying the new fluffy bed she made herself.
