The Bookshelf Came Down. Look Who's Sitting on Top of It Now.
Sunlight streams across a scene of literary disaster. A tall wooden bookshelf has tipped over and broken at an angle, and paperback novels are scattered everywhere, splayed open across the rug and floorboards. A potted plant has fallen over by the wall, spilling soil and leaves. Perched on one of the slanted shelves, looking right into the room with alert amber eyes and big tufted ears, is a cinnamon Abyssinian. The ears are pulled back just slightly. Even she seems a little impressed by the size of this mess.
Abyssinians are among the most active and athletic cat breeds. They have a warm, ticked coat that gives each hair bands of color, and they are known for being curious, playful, and almost constantly on the move. They love climbing, so tall furniture is a natural magnet. That is why it is important to anchor bookcases, dressers, and cabinets to the wall with furniture straps or brackets, especially in homes with energetic pets or small children. Giving a climbing cat sturdy, approved places to go, such as wall shelves made for cats or a tall cat tree, helps channel that energy safely. Plenty of daily play can also keep an Abyssinian from inventing her own entertainment.
Reading is supposed to open new worlds. This cat just took that idea very literally. With a little cleanup and a couple of wall anchors, the library will be back in business soon.
