Last Night's Pasta Dishes Are Still in the Sink. So Is the Devon Rex.

Last night's pasta dinner is still in the sink. There is a plate smeared with red sauce and a few twists of rotini, a fork, a cloudy glass of water, a bowl with leftover crumbs, and a soapy blue sponge waiting on the edge. Right in the middle of it all, standing on the dishes with perfect balance, is a slender grey Devon Rex. The enormous ears are pinned slightly back, the pale green eyes are glancing sideways, and the wavy coat looks a little rumpled. It is not the face of a cat planning to explain himself.

Devon Rex cats are playful, mischievous, and endlessly curious, often described as part cat, part monkey because of how they climb and explore. Their unusually short, curly coats make them feel soft and warm, and they tend to seek out cozy spots and human company. A sink full of food-scented dishes is basically an invitation. A few things are worth knowing, though. Pasta sauces often contain onion and garlic, which are harmful to cats, and dish soap residue is not something they should lick. Running the dishwasher or rinsing dishes promptly, wiping counters, and offering an enticing perch away from the sink can help curb this habit.

Every kitchen needs a pre-rinse inspector, and this one clearly takes the job seriously. The dishes still need washing, but now at least they have been thoroughly examined by an expert with very large ears and very questionable standards.
