The Feathers Are Still Falling. The Devon Rex Is Trying to Be Invisible.

Feathers are still in the air. They drift and twirl all around the room, settling on the couch, the rug, and a nearby table, while the ruined white pillow lies in a heap on the floor. Perched right on top of the remains is a black Devon Rex with a crinkly coat, giant satellite-dish ears, and round golden eyes that are absolutely enormous with surprise. He has frozen in place, one tuft of feather clinging to his chest, as though staying perfectly still might make him invisible.

Devon Rex cats are known for their elfin looks and mischievous, high-energy personalities. They love to play, climb, and be the center of attention, and they often keep their kittenish enthusiasm well into adulthood. Feather pillows are irresistible to many cats because the feathers move unpredictably and smell faintly like birds. While a few loose feathers are not usually a problem, swallowing quill pieces or large amounts of fabric and fill can cause digestive trouble. Feather wand toys used during supervised play can satisfy that bird-hunting instinct safely. Put them away afterward, since unsupervised string and feathers can be a hazard. If your cat eats something unusual and seems unwell, talk to your vet.

It may take days to find every last feather. Some will surely turn up in the strangest places for months. But the image of this tiny, wide-eyed culprit sitting in his own private snow globe makes the cleanup almost worth it.
