A Paper Blizzard Hit the Hallway. The Only Witness Has Very Long Ears.
The hallway looks like a paper blizzard came through, and the only witness has very long ears. A tricolor Basset Hound sits on a patterned carpet runner surrounded by torn scraps of toilet paper, with bits scattered all the way to the doorway and up against the wall. Its velvety brown ears drape nearly to the floor, its white paws are planted among the shreds, and its droopy eyes glance off to the side with the weary, mournful look the breed is famous for. A shaft of afternoon sunlight falls across the wall, and a pair of shoes rests by the open door.
Basset Hounds are scent hounds with one of the best noses in the dog world, and their long ears are thought to help sweep scents toward the nose. They are usually gentle, easygoing, and patient, though they can be stubborn when a smell captures their attention. Their long backs and short legs mean it is important to keep them at a healthy weight. Shredding paper is a common way for dogs to entertain themselves when bored. Daily sniff walks, scent games, and food puzzles are especially satisfying for nose-driven breeds like this one, and keeping bathroom doors closed helps protect the paper supply.
With a face like that, it is almost impossible to tell whether this hound is sorry or just tired from all the hard work. Either way, a nap is clearly next on the agenda.
