The Bernese Mountain Dog Froze Mid-Bite When He Realized Someone Was Watching
Frozen mid-chomp, eyes as wide as dinner plates, this Bernese Mountain Dog knows the jig is up. Half a sandwich hangs from his mouth, with ham, cheese, and lettuce poking out the sides, while the other half lies on the tile floor beside his big white-tipped paw. His black, rust, and white coat is glossy and thick, and his eyebrows have shot up in a look of pure shock at being discovered. Behind him, the kitchen counter holds a mixing bowl, a mug, and a coat tossed aside, and a stuffed bunny slumps on the floor near a potted plant.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are large, gentle working dogs from Switzerland, originally used to pull carts and help on farms. They are known for their sweet, devoted personalities and their love of family. Their size also means they can easily reach kitchen counters, which makes counter surfing a common challenge. Prevention is the most reliable fix. Keep food pushed far back or put away, and never leave a tempting sandwich unattended. Teaching a solid leave it, rewarding the dog for lying on a mat while you cook, and making the counter boring rather than rewarding all help over time. Punishing a dog after the fact tends to be confusing rather than useful.
For now, this big, fluffy sandwich thief seems to be weighing his options. Finish the evidence, or try to look innocent? Judging by his face, the sandwich is going to win.
