There Was Milk All Over the Kitchen Floor. Snowball Has a Different Story.
Spilled milk, and not a single tear in sight. A white shorthaired cat stands on a wooden kitchen floor right in the center of a wide, glossy puddle of milk, its paws planted in the spill and its golden eyes looking straight ahead with remarkable composure. Splashes trail off in every direction across the floorboards. Behind it, the kitchen is a bit of a disaster too: a plaid shirt draped over a chair, dish towels crumpled on the floor, a basket of onions and garlic, and bananas resting on the counter in the warm light from the window.
Cats and milk go together in old storybooks, but many adult cats are actually lactose intolerant. After kittenhood, a lot of cats produce less of the enzyme needed to digest lactose, so cow's milk can lead to an upset stomach or diarrhea. Fresh water is the best everyday drink for cats. If you want to offer something special, there are milk-style treats made for cats, but they should be an occasional extra rather than a staple. And with onions and garlic in the background, it is a good reminder that both are toxic to cats, so keep them stored safely away.
We will call her Snowball, because she clearly fits the part. She did not knock the milk over, she would like you to know. She is simply standing guard over it until someone comes with a mop.
