The Sandwich Was Left Alone for Exactly One Minute
The sandwich is still on the floor, one big bite missing, lettuce and a slice of ham spilling out onto the tile. Right beside it sits a cream-colored Ragdoll with enormous blue eyes, fur dusted with a few telltale crumbs. She has gone completely still, the way a cat does when she hopes that holding perfectly motionless makes her invisible. Behind her, a tote bag and a potted plant look on in silence.
Ragdolls are known for being gentle, people-oriented cats that often follow their owners from room to room, which makes them very aware of where the snacks are. Like most cats, though, they are obligate carnivores, and deli meat tempts them just as much as it tempts anyone else. A sandwich can be a problem, because onions, garlic and some seasoned or salty meats are not good for cats. A few crumbs of plain bread will not hurt, but it is wise to keep lunch off low surfaces and to talk to your vet if a cat eats something unusual.
A tidy habit helps too. Eating at the table and clearing plates right away teaches a curious cat that the floor is not a buffet, and a puzzle feeder gives her clever paws something legal to work on instead.
For now, this one is calling her little crime a team effort between hunger and opportunity. She has the look of someone who would like to explain, if only the explaining did not involve the lettuce on the floor.
