The Chocolate Lab Got Into the Flour and Left a Trail of Evidence

AI imagelabrador retrieverflourkitchen

A dusting of white flour covers the whole face of a chocolate brown Labrador, from the top of the nose to the soft brows above his eyes. Behind him, a torn bag of flour has spilled across the counter, and bowls, towels and dishes are scattered everywhere. The Lab sits on the floor looking at the camera with big, wide, hopeful eyes, as though he might still be able to make a convincing argument.

Labrador Retrievers are friendly, eager and famously food-motivated, which makes kitchens their favorite room. They are smart and easy to train, and many are happiest when working for a treat. The same appetite means they should be watched around people's food, and a countertop at a Lab's nose level is a serious temptation. Plain flour is not usually dangerous in small amounts, but a big mouthful can be dry and upsetting, and flour often sits next to ingredients like chocolate, raisins or xylitol sweetener, which are harmful to dogs. If a dog eats any of those, call your vet right away.

Putting baking supplies in a closed cabinet and giving the dog a chew or a stuffed toy during cooking keeps everyone calmer. Also, wiping that floury nose is a good idea before he sneezes all over the room.

He wears the flour like a ghostly mask and holds his gaze with total confidence. Dinner may be delayed, but the cleanup crew has obviously arrived.
