This Corgi Left the Whole Family Without Shoes and Looks Happy

A heap of well-chewed shoes lies beside a fluffy brown Corgi: sneakers with frayed laces, sandals with bitten straps, and one boot missing its sole. The dog looks up with warm, honest eyes and a slight tilt of the head, the ears upright, the chest fur soft and a little tousled. Behind, a pile of clothes drapes over the couch, and the whole room has the look of a shoe sale after a storm.

Corgis are cheerful, clever herding dogs with a lot of energy packed into short legs. Shoes smell strongly of their owners, which makes them an irresistible chew toy, especially for dogs left alone or still teething. Giving your dog plenty of walks, safe chew toys, and a place for the shoes, like a closed closet or a high rack, will help. Swallowed bits of rubber or fabric can cause blockages, so if you think your dog ate part of a shoe, call your vet. A little training with trade-up games also teaches a Corgi that handing over a shoe earns a treat.

There will be a lot of shoe shopping this week. The Corgi is entirely unbothered, her tail certainly wagging just out of the frame, and she sits there as though she had completed a very satisfying piece of work. Next time the shoes will go in the closet, and the Corgi will check the door twice, just in case.
