The Curtain Came Down, and a Little White Ghost Looked Out
Draped in a frayed cream curtain with its fringed edges trailing across the floor, a white cat peers out with big yellow-green eyes and flattened ears. The cloth hangs over her head like a hood, giving her the look of a very small, very fluffy ghost. In the cluttered living room behind her, a stuffed bunny, a few toys, a pair of glasses, and a half-finished drink rest on the coffee table, as a lamp glows softly beside the sofa.
Cats love to climb curtains, burrow under fabric, and hide in cozy places. Hiding gives them a sense of safety, and being covered can feel snug and warm, much like a den. Many cats also enjoy the way fabric moves and catches their claws. A curtain can be a hazard, though. Fabric can come loose and tangle a small climber, and swallowed threads can cause stomach trouble. If your cat loves climbing, add a sturdy cat tree by the window so she has her own lookout, and use a hanging system that comes off easily if it is tugged. Offer her a covered bed or a cardboard box with a blanket in it as a safe hideout. If she swallows any fabric, talk to your vet.
She seems satisfied with her disguise, and honestly it is a good one. The whole room is looking for a cat, and she has made herself part of the scenery.
