The Loaf Has a Bite Missing, and the Black Cat Is Staring at the Ceiling
A crusty loaf of bread sits on the counter with a gaping hole in its end, and crumbs are scattered across the white surface. Right next to it, a black cat with bright green eyes sits tall and looks straight up as though listening to a distant noise on the ceiling. Black hairs dust the counter, a blue towel is bunched at the edge, and morning light falls on the tile wall behind her.
Black cats often get a reputation for mystery, but they are just cats with a very dramatic coat color, and each has her own personality. Like all cats, they are curious and agile, and a countertop is just another landing spot. Bread is not a toxic food for cats in small amounts, but it offers no real nutrition for them, and some breads contain ingredients such as raisins, garlic, or onions that can be dangerous. Raw dough is a bigger concern, since it can rise in a cat's stomach. Keep bread in a closed box or a cupboard, and wipe the counter after use so crumbs do not invite another visit. A cat tree near the kitchen window gives her a high perch of her own, and if she eats anything you are worried about, call your vet.
She is playing the part of an innocent bystander very well. The crumbs on the counter, though, are doing a poor job of backing her up.
