A White Cat Dug Up the Flower Bed and Sat Down in the Middle
Dark soil lies loose and churned around a fluffy white cat, and tiny green seedlings poke up here and there between her paws. She sits upright in the middle of the flower bed with golden-yellow eyes, a pink nose, and a few specks of dirt on her chest and one paw. A wooden fence and an overturned terracotta pot stand in the background, and the afternoon looks bright and warm.
Cats often use soft garden soil as a litter box, because it is easy to dig and feels familiar, and they also love to dig for the pleasure of it. To protect a garden, you can cover bare soil with chicken wire, large stones, or prickly plant clippings, and provide a sandbox for the cat. Some garden plants and products are poisonous to cats, so check what you are growing and talk to your vet if your cat nibbles something unfamiliar. A quick wash of the paws after outdoor adventures is also a kindness for the living room carpet.
We will call her Snowdrop. She is the only clean thing in a very dirty bed, and she knows it, holding her chin up as if the whole garden had been arranged around her. Her whiskers are perfectly white, and the new seedlings look like admirers. The gardener may have a long afternoon of replanting ahead, but the cat has found her favorite spot.
