A Chocolate Lab Sat Down at the Table Before Anyone Else Did

Breakfast was served, and then it was joined by a very large guest. A chocolate Labrador named Cocoa has climbed right up onto the kitchen table and now sits beside a plate of scrambled eggs and toast, a bowl of strawberries, a glass of water and a pat of butter. Her brown eyes look up with a sweet, wide innocence, and the morning light spills over the counters behind her, with a banana still waiting by the lamp.

Labrador Retrievers are famous for their love of food, and many seem to be hungry all the time. They are friendly, eager to please and very easy to read, which is why this expression is so convincing. Because many Labs gain weight easily, measured meals and healthy treats matter. Keeping food off the edge of counters and tables, and teaching a calm 'place' command, can make mealtimes more peaceful.

A table full of people food also holds some hazards. Grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions and anything sweetened with xylitol are dangerous for dogs, so it is best to keep them out of reach. If your dog eats something questionable, call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away.

Cocoa, naturally, is not thinking about hazards. She is simply a patient diner waiting for someone to pass the toast, with the calm of a dog who truly believes the table was set for her.
