There Was a Great Dane Sitting Inside the Dishwasher

The dishwasher door is open, and something enormous is inside. A blue-grey Great Dane named Duke has somehow arranged his long legs on the lower rack, with his front paws gripping the edge and his big, soft face peeking out. A faint, tiny smile tugs at his mouth. A glass of water sits on the counter above him, and a cloth hangs from the edge as if the kitchen is holding its breath.

Great Danes are among the tallest dogs in the world, yet they are famously gentle and often act like lap dogs. Many do not seem to realize how large they are. That mix of size and sweetness explains why a Dane may squeeze into spaces far too small for him. Dishwashers are also full of leftover food smells, which is a strong reason for a curious dog to investigate.

An open dishwasher is a real hazard for dogs. Sharp knives, forks and broken glass can injure paws and mouths, and detergent can be harmful if licked. It is best to load sharp items with the points down, close the door right away and keep the pods out of reach. If your dog licks soap or swallows something from the machine, call your vet.

For now, Duke sits patiently in his steel kennel, hoping that no one asks him to explain. With those gentle eyes he almost pulls it off, though the rack is clearly not built for a dog his size.
