The Border Collie Said He Was Just Guarding the Curtain
It started as a simple curtain and ended up as a very fashionable cape. A red and white Border Collie named Scout sits in the middle of the living room with a torn beige curtain draped over his head and shoulders like a hooded cloak. His amber eyes are wide open, his white chest fur peeks out and the whole pose says that he knows he has been spotted. A laundry basket and a few toys sit behind him.
Border Collies are widely considered one of the most intelligent breeds, and they were developed to herd sheep over long days. That means a huge need for movement and mental work. A Collie with nothing to do may start herding household objects or tugging at anything that moves, and a swaying curtain is hard to resist. Daily running, fetch, training games and puzzle toys help channel all that brainpower in a better direction.
If a dog likes to tug on curtains, it is a good idea to tie the cords up high and keep a close eye on the situation, because a dog can get tangled. Pulling down heavy rods can also cause injuries. A sturdy tug toy gives the same satisfaction without the laundry bill.
Scout, wrapped like a tiny wizard, holds perfectly still. He has stopped mid-adventure, and with that fabric hood he looks almost royal. The cape is clearly his now.
