A Little Yorkie Did Some Remodeling on the Couch Cushion
The couch cushion has a new look, and the Yorkie is hoping nobody notices. A blue and tan Yorkshire Terrier named Peaches sits next to it with her ears folded back and her dark eyes lifted in a worried glance. The fabric is chewed and frayed, with little white tufts of stuffing stuck along the edges, and the room behind her holds a blanket, a basket and a few scattered belongings.
Yorkshire Terriers were originally bred to catch rats in mills, and that determined terrier spirit lives on in today's tiny companions. They are confident, curious and often much braver than their size suggests. Chewing and tearing is a normal terrier habit, especially in young dogs or when they are bored. A good chew toy and a few minutes of daily play can keep little teeth busy.
If a dog is chewing furniture, it can help to cover the cushions when you leave and give a safe alternative the dog really likes. Never punish after the fact, because dogs do not link the scolding to something they did earlier. Stuffing can cause stomach trouble when swallowed, so call your vet if your dog eats a bunch of it.
Peaches sits close to the damaged cushion as though guarding it, tiny and a little sheepish. The ears say sorry, but the bright eyes say she had a fantastic time.
