A Black Newfoundland Sat Down Inside the Empty Pizza Box

AI imagenewfoundlandpizza boxliving room

There used to be a pizza in this box. Now there is a very large black Newfoundland named Bruno, sitting right in the middle of it with grease spots and crumbs on the cardboard and a calm, wide-eyed expression that reaches almost as far as the camera. Behind him, a blue blanket drapes over the couch, and a pair of slippers and a few remote controls rest on a side table.

Newfoundlands are giant, sweet-natured dogs with thick, water-resistant coats and a reputation as patient babysitters. They are strong swimmers and were once used to help fishermen haul nets. Their size means a Newf can reach things on counters and low tables easily, so it is wise to put food well back. Their heavy coats and drool also mean they like cool places and plenty of water.

Pizza is not a good meal for a dog. It is often high in salt and fat, and toppings such as onion, garlic or sausage can make dogs sick. If a dog eats a lot of pizza, call your vet. Greasy boxes should be put straight in a closed bin, because the smell is a magnet for dogs of all sizes.

Bruno sits there with a kind of gentle dignity, like a giant who simply wandered in and made himself at home. The pizza has gone, but he looks quite at peace.
