A Shih Tzu Ran Out Into the Snow With a Very Special Prize
Snow dusts the backyard fence, and a gold and white Shih Tzu named Mitten is trotting proudly through it with a grey glove in her mouth. Her fluffy face is framed with long, wispy fur, and her dark eyes look straight at the camera with a tiny, guilty smile. The glove dangles from her jaws, and some old branches lie piled in the corner behind her.
Shih Tzus were bred as little companions for royal households, and they still love to be close to their people. They are friendly, playful and a bit cheeky, and they often carry off small items like gloves, socks or slippers as a way to get attention. Their long coat holds snow and ice, so winter walks are best kept short, and a gentle towel rub afterward helps prevent tangles and chills.
In cold weather, small dogs lose body heat quickly, so a snug coat can help on longer outings. Check paws for ice balls and salt, which can irritate the skin. A stolen glove is mostly harmless, but wool and fabric can cause trouble if swallowed, so trade it for a treat before it gets chewed. Talk to your vet if you are unsure.
Mitten holds her prize high, with the air of a champion carrying a trophy home. It is probably the best winter day she has had.
