The Birman Helped With the Gardening, Whether Anyone Asked or Not
The flower bed was planted with care, and now it is mostly soil. The seal point Birman sits right in the middle of it, her white paws muddy, her dark face lifted, and her sapphire eyes meeting ours with a tiny guilty smile. A pair of green gardening gloves lies nearby, and a small trowel and an overturned terracotta pot complete the scene.
Cats love loose soil. It is soft, it holds the scent of other animals, and it is the perfect place to dig, roll and, well, use as a bathroom. A freshly turned flower bed is practically an invitation. Birmans are gentle, social cats with silky coats, and this one has clearly decided that gardening is a team effort.
If your cat loves digging, a few simple tricks can help. Cover bare soil with chicken wire or large stones, or give her a cat-safe sandbox of her own. Be careful about plants too, since some garden flowers, including lilies, are very dangerous to cats, and fertilizers and slug baits can be harmful. If your cat gets into something unsafe, call your vet.
The Birman wants everyone to know she has been very helpful. She turned the soil, she checked the roots and she kept the gloves company. If the garden looks different, it is because she believes it is improved.
