A Border Collie Is Lying on the Counter Next to a Sandwich
Stretched out on the kitchen counter like he owns it, a blue merle Border Collie looks sideways with his ears pulled back and a sheepish look in his dark eyes. In front of his paws sits a sandwich with a large bite taken out of it, a leaf of lettuce, a slice of tomato, and a few crumbs spilling onto the counter.
Morning light fills the kitchen, shining on a sink, a green dish towel, a basket of fruit, and a mug at the edge of the counter. His black, silver, and white coat is soft against the pale countertop.
Border Collies are widely regarded as one of the smartest dog breeds, bred for herding sheep, and they need a lot of exercise and mental work. A bored Border Collie may learn to open cabinets, climb onto counters, or find ways to get snacks. Giving him a job, such as learning tricks, playing fetch, or working a puzzle feeder, helps. Some sandwich ingredients, like onions and certain sauces, are harmful to dogs, so call your vet if you are worried about what he ate. Keep food out of reach and teach an off command to keep him off the counter.
His look is a mix of guilt and pride, because he did take a very neat bite. He may be clever, but so is the sandwich thief.
