A Gentle Basset Hound Sits Beside the Teddy Bear's Last Stand
The teddy bear lies flat on the wooden floor with its stomach open and a cloud of white stuffing around it, and the Basset Hound sitting behind him tilts his head with a gentle, hopeful smile. His long lemon-colored ears hang straight down, his dark eyes look up, and a few puffs of fluff cling to the floor around his paws.
The room behind him is cozy and untidy, with a wicker basket of laundry, a pair of jeans, a plant on a windowsill, and a soft blanket. A person's feet appear at the edge of the picture, as if someone has just come in to see what happened.
Basset Hounds are gentle, easygoing dogs with a famously sweet nature. They were bred to track scents, and they have long, low bodies and big, droopy ears. Because of their build, they can get chubby, so keep treats modest and walks regular. Many dogs like plush toys, but some will tear them open, and stuffing, plastic eyes, and squeakers can be dangerous if swallowed. Choose durable toys, check them regularly, and take away any that fall apart. If your dog swallows part of a toy, call your vet. Giving him a few sturdy chew toys can keep teddy bears safe.
He looks so kind that you can almost forgive him. The bear, sadly, did not make it, but its sacrifice was very fluffy.
