A Giant Newfoundland Met an Open Jar of Peanut Butter
The jar of peanut butter on the counter is open, the lid is gone, and the biggest brown Newfoundland in the neighborhood is sitting right next to it with a nose covered in golden smears. Little bits of peanut butter are stuck across his muzzle and between his whiskers, and his soulful brown eyes look up with deep, sheepish concern. His ears are pulled back, and the kitchen behind him shows a fork, a folded towel, and a bowl with more peanut butter in it. It is a very quiet, very sticky confession.
Newfoundlands are gentle giants, known for their sweet, patient temperaments and their love of water. They were originally working dogs who helped fishermen pull nets, and they are usually good with children. Many dogs love peanut butter, and it can be a handy treat in small amounts, but it is important to check the label first. Some peanut butters contain xylitol, a sweetener that is very dangerous to dogs, so always read the ingredients and call your vet right away if you think your dog ate something with it. Also, a Newfoundland's heavy coat and drooly mouth appreciate a good wipe after a snack.
This big fellow looks as if he is already sorry, but also as if he would not mind another spoonful. The ears say remorse and the nose says delight. It is a sweet reminder that even the most dignified dogs have a soft spot for a jar left within reach.
