The White Rug Lasted Exactly Until the Golden Retriever Came Home
The white shag rug used to be spotless, and now it has a story to tell. A pale cream Golden Retriever lies right in the middle of it, mud drying on her chest and paws, with muddy paw prints trailing across the fibers like a map of her afternoon. Her ears sit low and slightly back, her brown eyes are soft and apologetic, and there's a dab of dirt on her nose. A rope toy and a chew bone sit nearby on the floor, as if they were witnesses. We'll call her Honey.
Golden Retrievers are known as friendly, eager-to-please family dogs who love water, mud and anything that smells interesting outdoors. Their dense double coat holds on to dirt, so a quick wipe-down at the door can save a lot of cleanup. Keeping a towel by the entrance, trimming the hair between the paw pads, and brushing regularly all help. A washable rug or a mat just inside the door gives muddy paws a place to land first. Most goldens enjoy the routine once it is paired with a treat, and a rinse after a particularly messy walk is perfectly normal.
Honey doesn't seem to mind the evidence in the least. She did something fun outside and came straight back to share the news. The only thing missing is somebody coming around the corner with a towel and a long sigh.
