A Cereal Box Was Left Open. A Tiny Yorkie Moved In.

A very small Yorkshire Terrier has found a very large cardboard box and decided it is hers. She sits up straight inside it, steel-blue back and golden tan face lit by the window, ears pointed and dark eyes fixed on someone out of frame. Behind the box, a chewed plush toy lies on the wooden floor with a few scraps of stuffing nearby, and a slipper sits at the edge of the frame. Her whiskery chin lifts a little, as if she's waiting for applause. We'll call her Pip.

Dogs, like cats, often love boxes. A small, enclosed space can feel safe and cozy, and many dogs enjoy curling up in somewhere that surrounds them on all sides. Yorkshire Terriers are tiny but bold, and they often take to snug hideaways just as quickly as they take to adventure. Cardboard is fine for sitting in, but make sure your dog doesn't chew and swallow big pieces, since paper and cardboard can upset the stomach. A soft bed placed inside a sturdy box, or a covered crate with a blanket, gives a small dog a den that is safe for chewing as well as for naps.

Pip looks very comfortable and not at all sorry. She's studying the room from her new castle, and the plush toy by the floor remains an unsolved mystery. The box has a new owner, and everything else will just have to work around it.
