The Cake Was Frosted for a Party. The Shih Tzu Had Already Tasted It.
A gold and white Shih Tzu lies on the cool kitchen tile with both front paws stretched out and covered in thick white frosting. Her ears are pulled back, her dark eyes look sideways with an embarrassed glint, and crumbs and smears of cream dot the floor around her. Behind her, a mixing bowl with a spoon still in it sits on the floor next to a glass bowl, and a dish towel hangs over a cabinet door. Her long silky fur is a little messy. We'll call her Cupcake, and she's got the evidence on her paws.
Shih Tzus are small, friendly dogs that were bred as companions, and they love to be close to their people. They have long, silky double coats that need frequent brushing, and sticky frosting in the fur needs to be cleaned gently with warm water. Cake and frosting are not good for dogs because of the sugar and fat, and some ingredients, such as chocolate or sweeteners like xylitol, can be dangerous. If your dog eats a lot of sweet treats, call your vet. Keeping mixing bowls on the counter and baking goods out of reach is the easiest way to avoid a mess like this one.
Cupcake looks like someone who knows the party is over. Her ears are down, her paws are sticky, and the bowl is empty. A warm wipe and a calm talk will clean her up, and she'll be back to her happy self in no time.
