A Newfoundland Quietly Collected a Whole Mouthful of Socks
A bundle of socks hangs from Moose's mouth, striped and gray and navy, and he is doing his best to look as if he is not holding anything. The black Newfoundland sits on the wooden floor with his big dark head turned toward the right, soulful eyes cast aside and a thick, glossy coat gleaming. Behind him, a laundry basket brims with clothes and a sofa is draped in a gray blanket. The sock thief has clearly visited the hamper, and he seems to feel no real shame about it.
Newfoundlands are famously sweet-tempered giants. They were bred as working dogs on the Canadian coast, with webbed feet, a water-resistant coat and a strong swimming ability, and they are known for being patient and gentle with children. Like many dogs, they sometimes carry things in their mouths, and socks are favorites because they smell strongly of their owners. Swallowed socks, however, can cause dangerous blockages in dogs, so keep laundry out of reach and teach a reliable trade command, where the dog swaps the item for a treat. Large dogs also need regular brushing because of their thick coats, and they can overheat in warm weather, so keep them cool and in the shade. If your dog swallows something it should not have, call your vet.
Moose will politely hand over the socks, as long as there is a treat. Big dogs seem to have big hearts.
