A Saint Bernard General Stands Proud Beneath a Chest of Medals
General Augustus stands with a noble, dignified expression, and his chest is covered in medals. The red and white Saint Bernard has a broad white blaze, soft brown ears, warm dark eyes and a thick, fluffy white ruff. He wears a navy military coat embroidered with gold, heavy golden epaulettes and a wide red sash across his chest, with stars and crosses pinned all over. The dark, stormy background makes his gold and red details glow, and the painted surface has fine cracks like an old battlefield portrait.
Saint Bernards have a long history in the Swiss Alps, where they were kept by monks at a mountain hospice and are said to have helped find travelers in the snow. They are large, gentle dogs with a calm, patient temperament, and they tend to be good with children and families. Because of their size, they need plenty of room, early training and sturdy equipment. They also drool and shed, so be prepared for some cleanup. Saint Bernards can overheat in warm weather, so make sure they have shade, cool places to rest and plenty of water. Like other giant breeds, they can be prone to joint problems and bloat, so talk to your vet about feeding and care. Their gentle manner makes them popular family dogs.
The General has won every battle with his cuddles. His medals may be heavy, but his heart is much heavier.
