Nobody at Court Knew What the Pug Lady-in-Waiting Was Thinking
Two enormous dark eyes look out from a wrinkled little face, and somehow they command the whole room. This black Pug serves as lady in waiting, wearing a velvet cap trimmed with pearls, a ruffled lace collar, and a navy gown stitched with gold flowers. A folding fan rests in one paw, closed for now, ready to be snapped open at the first hint of court gossip. Behind her, a few painted leaves fade into the dusty dark.
Pugs have been companions to people for many centuries, and they are known for being affectionate, clownish, and very attached to their families. Their flat faces are charming, but they can make breathing harder in heat or during hard exercise. Short walks in cool parts of the day, fresh water, and a harness instead of a tight collar are all sensible habits. Pugs also love to eat, so measuring meals helps keep them trim. The wrinkles on the face need gentle cleaning and drying to stay comfortable. Your vet can give advice that fits your individual dog.
Our lady in waiting has the look of someone who has heard every secret in the palace and will take them all to her grave, as long as there is a treat involved. The fan may be for show. The snoring, one suspects, is not.
