The Huntsman Heard the Horn Before Anyone Else in the Forest
Alert amber eyes watch from a face painted half in black and half in white, with a scattering of freckles across the muzzle. The Border Collie huntsman wears a forest green velvet coat with gold buttons and braid, and a lace cravat is tied neatly at his neck. At his side hangs a small hunting horn, ready for the call. His ears are half perked, as if he has just heard something rustle in the woods, and his whole posture says he is waiting for the next order.
Border Collies are widely considered one of the smartest dog breeds, and they were developed to herd sheep with sharp focus. That brainpower comes with a need for a job. They require lots of daily exercise and mental work, such as training games, puzzle toys, and fetch. Without enough activity they may invent their own jobs, like herding children or chasing shadows. Early socialization and consistent, positive training help them become well-mannered companions. A fenced yard and active owners suit them best. Ask your vet about exercise, nutrition, and routine health care for your dog.
The huntsman looks ready for the chase, but in truth he would probably rather herd all the hounds into a neat, orderly line. No dog in the kingdom is more eager to be of service, and none will work harder for a pat and a kind word.
