The Basset Queen Wore Her Crown and Sighed Like Only a Basset Can
A gold crown set with pearls, blue gems, and little pink flowers perches above the long, sad, lovely face of a tricolor Basset Hound queen. Her ears hang almost to her shoulders in smooth velvety folds, and her heavy-lidded brown eyes seem to look at the viewer with patient tenderness. A cape of white ermine spotted with black tails lies across her shoulders over a pink and cream satin gown, finished with a pink ribbon and a pearl brooch at the throat. Pastel roses and golden scrolls bloom behind her.
Basset Hounds are scent hounds with an extraordinary sense of smell, and their long ears and loose skin help trap scent close to their noses. They are gentle, friendly, and generally easygoing, but they can be stubborn on walks if a smell captures their attention. Their short legs and long backs need care, so avoid jumping from heights, and keep their weight under control. The long ears should be cleaned regularly, as they can trap moisture. Ask your vet about ear care and diet, and give a Basset plenty of time for slow, sniffing strolls.
The queen is in no rush to rule. She will announce her decrees in due time, perhaps after a nap, and perhaps as a soft, sleepy sigh. Her subjects love her anyway, because a queen with those eyes can ask for anything at all.
