The Huntsman Heard Something Outside the Frame and Froze
The Jack Russell has his head turned slightly, one folded ear brown and the other tipped with white, and his bright eyes are fixed on something just outside the frame. He wears a green velvet coat with gold embroidery down the front and a cloak over one shoulder. Behind him, a Renaissance valley with a winding river, blue cliffs and a distant castle glows under high clouds. Every detail is calm, except that the huntsman looks as though he is about to leave the portrait to chase something.
Jack Russell Terriers were bred in England for fox hunting, and they carry a burst of energy and a very strong prey drive. They are clever, bold and sometimes stubborn, and a bored terrier can dig, chew or escape. Plenty of exercise, such as brisk walks, fetch and agility games, helps, as do puzzle toys and short, positive training sessions. They also need a secure yard with a high, strong fence, because many can jump and squeeze through surprisingly small gaps. Early socialization helps them get along with other dogs and visitors. Despite their small size, they tend to have a big, confident personality, so choose a lead and a harness that fit well. Your vet can recommend an exercise plan.
The huntsman has clearly smelled something remarkable, and the only thing holding him back is the paint.
