The Shiba Duchess Wore a Hat So Tall That Feathers Took Over

Soft cream fur, a small black nose and gently arched brows give this Shiba Inu a polite, thoughtful face, and the hat above it is a spectacle. A green velvet cap with gold trim holds a spray of white ostrich-style feathers that curl out and back like a wave. A double strand of pearls rests on her chest, and her gown is green velvet worked in gold leaves and a small red rose. The background is dark green drapery. The Duchess has clearly been seated for some time, and she is handling it with grace.

The Shiba Inu is Japan's smallest native hunting breed, and it is known for a fox-like face and a spirited, independent streak. Many Shibas are clean, quiet and a bit aloof, which owners often describe as cat-like. They can also be stubborn, so early training and socialization matter. A secure fence or leash is wise, since many have a strong urge to dart off. Their thick double coat sheds heavily twice a year, and regular brushing helps. Keep training short and rewarding, and talk to your vet about exercise needs for your dog's age.

The feathers sway only in imagination, but they give the Duchess a lot of drama. She doesn't smile for the painter; that would be far too common for a lady of her rank.
