Somebody in This House Is About to Be Missing a Slipper
Somebody is going to be missing a slipper. Two fluffy cream puppies have dragged a worn tan house shoe into the middle of the floor and are working on it together, one gnawing at the toe and the other chewing the heel. Their feathery ears flop forward, their noses are scrunched in concentration, and both peek up with innocent dark eyes as if they have no idea how the slipper got there. A crumpled pair of jeans and a laundry basket in the background suggest the slipper wasn't the only thing left lying around.
Puppies are drawn to slippers, socks, and shoes for a simple reason: they smell strongly of their favorite people. Chewing is normal, but it helps to guide it toward the right things. Keeping shoes and clothing off the floor removes temptation. When you catch a puppy chewing something off limits, calmly offer a toy instead and praise it for taking the swap, a technique often called trading. Chasing a puppy to grab an item can turn it into an exciting game of keep-away. Giving puppies a few dedicated chew toys, and even rubbing a toy in your hands so it carries your scent, can make the right choice more appealing.
These two seem very pleased with their find, and since the slipper is already well loved, maybe it's time to let it retire as an official puppy toy.
One slipper, two puppies, and a perfect example of teamwork. The other slipper had better watch out.
