Four Red Dachshund Puppies Share One Narrow Windowsill
Overcast daylight comes through the window, but the sill is warm enough for four red Dachshund puppies. They sleep in a bundle, noses tucked, paws crossed, with one pup's face resting on another's back. Crumbs of old paint and the edge of a curtain frame the little pile, and the world outside is a soft, hazy gray.
A window ledge is a favorite napping place for many animals. It offers warmth, a view and a front-row seat to everything outdoors. Puppies often like to watch passing cars and birds, though it is smart to make sure the window is closed or has a sturdy screen, because a small puppy can slip or fall easily. Dachshunds have a keen sense of smell and sharp ears, so a window is a rich source of entertainment for them. If barking at passers-by becomes a habit, you can close the curtains or offer a chew toy to redirect attention. A cushion on the sill gives hard surfaces a softer touch, and low furniture nearby keeps a puppy from jumping down from too high.
For these four, the best entertainment is no entertainment. They are fast asleep, and the view can wait. The clouds can drift by, the neighbors can walk their dogs, and four small bodies will keep on warming each other until someone stirs.
