A Red Dachshund Puppy Tried Fresh Snow and Looked Delighted

AI imagedachshundred dachshundsnow

The snow is only a few inches deep, but to a red Dachshund puppy it might as well be a mountain. He stands with his belly almost touching the white surface, one paw lifted, a tiny pink tongue poking out and his eyes looking up with wonder. Behind him, a mess of logs, hoses and a single rubber boot gives the back porch a rustic look.

Snow is a big adventure for a young dog, but it needs to be handled carefully. Dachshunds have short legs and low bellies, so cold and wet reach them quickly. Keep outings brief, watch for shivering, and dry him off thoroughly when he comes in. Check paws for ice balls between the toes, and wipe them clean, since salt and de-icing products on walkways can irritate skin and are harmful if licked. A warm coat or sweater helps a short-haired Dachshund stay comfortable. Never leave a puppy outside for long in freezing weather. If he seems very cold, lethargic or uncomfortable, call your vet. A warm bed and fresh water waiting inside make the best finish to a snowy outing.

This little pup is thrilled by every cold flake and curious about every crunchy step. The yard will never seem the same to him again. Soon he will bounce back inside, shake off the flakes, and curl up near a warm radiator with a story to tell.
