Three Basset Hound Puppies Fell Asleep in a Cardboard Box

AI imagebasset houndcardboard boxsleeping

A plain cardboard box lined with a cream knitted blanket now holds three lemon and white Basset Hound puppies, fast asleep in a row. Their eyes are closed, their paws are crossed and their chins rest on the box or each other. Warm light comes from the side, and around them are a gray blanket, scattered clothes and a pair of shoes.

Boxes appeal to dogs for the same reason they appeal to cats: walls on every side mean safety and warmth. A box also lets puppies feel the closeness of their siblings, which helps them stay calm. To make a simple puppy nest, cut the front of the box low so it is easy to climb in, add soft, washable bedding and keep it in a quiet place. Replace cardboard when it gets chewed or damp, because swallowed bits can cause trouble. Basset Hounds are heavy for their size, so check that the box is strong enough to hold them. As they grow, move them to a proper dog bed. If you ever have concerns about sleep or health, ask your vet for advice. Meanwhile, enjoy the peaceful sight of three small pups with absolutely nowhere to be.

There is something deeply reassuring about a row of sleeping puppies. The box is full, the house is quiet, and all is well.
