Four Basset Hound Puppies Discover the First Snow in the Backyard

AI imagebasset houndsnowpuppies

Fresh snow blankets the yard, and four lemon and white Basset Hound puppies are bunched together in the middle of it. Paw prints crisscross the white behind them, ears flop sideways in the cold air, and one pup has his mouth open as if he's about to say something about it. A weathered wooden fence stands behind them.

Snow can be a thrilling first for puppies, and it should be enjoyed with care. Basset Hounds have short coats and low bodies that sit close to the cold ground, so keep outings short, watch for shivering and dry them well when they come in. Check paws for ice balls and wipe off any salt or de-icer, which can irritate skin and is harmful if licked. A coat can help in very cold weather. Their long ears can get cold and wet, so dry them gently. Puppies should never be left outside for long in freezing temperatures. If your puppy seems unwell after being outdoors, call your vet. A warm blanket and a bowl of fresh water inside are the perfect reward after a snowy adventure.

The snow will melt, but the tracks will be remembered. These four are having a splendid time in their first white winter. By the time they go inside, their ears will be damp, their noses pink and their dreams full of snowflakes.
