Tricolor Basset Puppies Made a Big Splash in the Kiddie Pool

AI imagebasset houndtricolorkiddie pool

Water flies in every direction as a crowd of tricolor Basset Hound puppies splashes in a bright blue kiddie pool. Some are standing, some are sitting, and a couple are looking up with wet, wide-eyed expressions, with droplets dripping from their long ears. Garden gloves, a towel, a hose and potted plants line the edge of the patio around them.

A shallow pool filled with clean water is a safe way to let puppies cool off. Bassets are not natural swimmers, as their heavy bodies and short legs make deep water a challenge, so keep the water shallow and always supervise. Empty the pool after use, and never leave puppies alone near water. On hot days, make sure there is shade, fresh drinking water and a towel for drying. Long ears can trap water and cause problems, so dry them gently and ask your vet about ear care. Puppies should only have outdoor water play once they are old enough and have the right vaccinations. Short sessions and gentle encouragement help puppies feel confident, and they should never be forced into the water. Plastic pools can also tip, so place them on level ground.

The splashing is loud, the water is cold, and every puppy seems to be having the day of his life. The towels will be needed soon.
