Four Saint Bernard Puppies Discovered the Snow in the Backyard

Fresh snow blankets the yard, and a group of Saint Bernard puppies is making the most of it. Flakes cling to their red-brown coats, and the pup in front sits up with round eyes and a surprised look. Two others wrestle behind it, and one pokes its nose into the powder. A snowy wooden fence and a stack of firewood stand in the background.

Saint Bernards come from the snowy Swiss Alps, so a winter scene suits them. Their thick coats keep them warm, and the breed is known for being comfortable in cold weather. Even so, puppies are smaller and more sensitive than adults, so keep outings short, dry them off afterward, and watch for ice balls forming between the toes. Wipe paws to remove salt and de-icer, which can irritate skin and upset stomachs.

The breed is also famous for rescue stories. Dogs of this type were kept at a hospice high in the Alps, and legends tell of them helping lost travelers. Today they are gentle family pets, known for patience and affection. They do drool and shed, and they need daily care and company, but many families find them wonderful companions.

The four seem happy with the snow, tumbling and sniffing with all the enthusiasm that a first big winter day deserves. Their warm coats will probably be damp and cold by the time they head inside, and a nice towel awaits.
