Two Saint Bernard Puppies Stood at the Pond's Muddy Edge
Two Saint Bernard puppies stand at the edge of a pond, their white paws on soft, damp ground and their round faces tilted toward the water. Reeds rise beside them, and the still pool reflects bits of sky. One pup watches the camera with big eyes, and the other looks down toward a patch of mud.
Ponds are interesting for puppies but can be hazardous. Still water can hide algae that is toxic to dogs, particularly in warm weather, and banks can be slippery. Never let a puppy drink from a pond, and keep it on a leash near water so it cannot fall in. Cold water can also be dangerous for young pups. If a puppy swallows pond water and seems ill, call your vet.
Saint Bernards were bred for the cold Swiss mountains, and many enjoy water play, though not all do. Because they are heavy and have thick coats, swimming requires care, and puppies need supervision. Rinse your puppy off after any outdoor adventure, and dry the ears to avoid irritation.
For these two, it seems enough to stand at the edge and look. Perhaps they are thinking about the first splash, or perhaps they are just admiring the reflections. Back on dry ground, a quick wipe of those big white paws will keep the house clean, and the reflections will be waiting next time.
