Five Sleepy Puppies Turned a Blanket Into a Giant Nest
Five red and white Border Collie puppies are fast asleep in a woolly blanket that has been spread across the sofa, their faces turned in all directions. Some cheeks rest on the next puppy's back, one muzzle points toward the ceiling and a single tiny paw is stretched over the blanket edge. Nearby, a pair of jeans and a chew toy on the floor hint at a lively day that has finally wound down.
When a litter sleeps in a pile, they are doing more than being cute. Huddling helps puppies regulate their body warmth, since very young dogs cannot do this well on their own. That is why a warm, draft-free place with soft bedding is important for a young pup, and why a new puppy often cries for company at night. Patience, a cozy bed and a regular routine help most puppies settle.
Border Collies are an active breed, and they will sleep deeply after a play session. Many owners notice a pup who has had enough mental stimulation sleeps even better than one who just ran around. Puzzle toys, short training games and gentle exploration all count as exercise for these thoughtful dogs.
Right now, though, the only activity is the slow rhythm of five small chests rising and falling. Tomorrow will bring new mischief, but tonight belongs to the blanket.
