A Puppy Eyed the Playpen Wall and Made His Move
Standing on his hind legs with both white paws hooked over the top rail, a red and white Border Collie puppy is plotting his great escape. His pink tongue is out, his ears are flopped to one side and his eyes are fixed on the world outside. The playpen's gray mesh walls are tall, but he looks quite sure that today is the day. The room beyond, with a houseplant and a sofa, looks very tempting.
A playpen can be a handy tool for new puppy owners. It gives a pup a safe space to play while you cook, work or take a breath, and it keeps small explorers away from cords, shoes and other hazards. A few toys, a soft bed and a bowl of water make it comfortable. It is best used for short stretches, with plenty of time outside it for play, training and cuddles.
Border Collies are agile and clever, so a determined pup like this one will test the edges regularly. It is a good reminder to choose a pen that is tall enough and sturdy, and never leave a puppy alone in one for long. Giving the dog something to do, like a chew toy or puzzle, keeps its mind busy and helps cut down on escape attempts.
For now he is only looking, and his tail would probably be wagging if you could see it. The big outdoors is waiting, and he knows it.
