This Spaniel Pup Spotted a Butterfly and Took Off Across the Lawn

A yellow swallowtail flutters through the air, and a brown-and-white puppy is utterly captivated. He bounds across the backyard lawn with his ears flapping, his front paws mid-stride, and his mouth open in a happy pant. His dark eyes are fixed upward on the butterfly, which floats just above the grass near the old wooden fence. Fallen leaves are scattered over the green, and the garden border lines the edge of the yard.

Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as gun dogs to flush birds from cover, and that history gives them sharp noses, quick eyes, and plenty of energy. A pup who chases butterflies is following that instinct. A securely fenced yard is a wonderful outlet, but this breed also needs daily walks and play to burn off its energy and keep its mind busy. Games like fetch and scent hunts suit them well.

Be mindful of where a chase leads, though. Puppies who are distracted by something moving can run into a road or a garden hazard without a second thought. A fence, a leash, and a reliable recall cue, taught with treats and patience, make outdoor fun much safer. Talk to your vet or a trainer if you want help getting started.

The butterfly is, of course, perfectly safe up there. But the chase is half the fun, and this pup is giving it everything he has.
