Two Corgi Puppies Hold a Rope Toy Between Them and Neither Lets Go
Two red and white Corgi puppies are nose to nose with a rope toy held between them. The pup on the left has its ears flopped and a soft expression, while the one on the right wears a fierce but sweet frown and ears angled out. Neither one is pulling very hard, but nobody has let go either. A tan carpet, a gray blanket, and a sunlit wall frame the sweet standoff.
Rope toys are a favorite among puppies because they are good for tugging, chewing, and pulling. Playing tug with a sibling helps puppies learn to control their bite and body language, and many of the little growls you hear are just part of a game. Watch for signs that play is getting too rough, such as stiff bodies or loud snarls, and give them a break if it does.
Check rope toys regularly, because frayed pieces can be swallowed and cause problems. Throw out any rope that is unraveling, and choose a size that suits your puppy. Corgis have strong jaws for their size and love games that involve pulling, so a good-quality tug toy is a smart addition to the toy box. If you ever worry that your pup swallowed a piece, call your vet.
These two seem to be negotiating a peace treaty. Neither is willing to give up the toy, and neither is willing to start the real tug. It might go on all afternoon, and nobody would mind.
