Abuela Had Barely Started the Throw. Chispa Was Already in the Air.
Abuela holds a bright yellow ball high in one hand, laughing as she leans forward in her floral apron and gray T-shirt. She has barely started the wind-up, but Chispa is already airborne, front paws off the ground, mouth open and eyes locked on the prize. The Havanese's black and white coat flies up with the motion, and her tail curls high behind her. The backyard is a cheerful jumble of potted plants, a blue watering can, a folding chair and laundry drying on the line behind the wooden fence. It is clearly not the first game of fetch here, and it won't be the last.
Havanese are playful, energetic little dogs, and although they do not need hours of exercise, they do enjoy regular activity. Short games of fetch, indoor tug and daily walks help keep them fit and content, and they often love learning tricks. For small dogs, choose balls that are large enough not to be swallowed but small enough to carry comfortably. Playing on grass or soft ground is easier on their joints than concrete. Games like this are also good for people, encouraging gentle movement and lots of laughter. Just stop for water breaks, especially on warm days.
Whether the ball goes ten feet or two, Chispa will bring it right back and ask for more. Abuela may tire out before her dog does, and that's perfectly fine.
