Abuela Was Supposed to Be Washing the Car. Chispa Turned It Into a Game.

A spray of water arcs off the side of a dark sedan parked in the driveway, sparkling in the afternoon light. Abuela grips a yellow hose nozzle in her apron and blue T-shirt, laughing so hard her eyes crinkle behind her glasses. The reason for the giggles is Chispa, who has reared up on her hind legs right in the spray, front paws paddling the air, mouth open in a delighted grin. Her black and white fur is getting thoroughly soaked. Potted geraniums line the fence, a wheelbarrow and scattered garden clutter sit in the side yard, and puddles shine on the concrete.

Plenty of dogs love chasing water from a hose or sprinkler, and it can be a fun way to burn energy and cool off. To keep it safe, use a gentle spray rather than a strong jet, avoid aiming at the face or ears, and let the hose run for a few seconds first, because water sitting in a sunny hose can be scalding. Car soap and cleaning products are not meant to be swallowed, so keep your dog away from sudsy runoff and offer clean drinking water. With a long coat like a Havanese's, towel her off thoroughly afterward so the fur underneath dries completely.

The car might end up with a few streaks and the dog will definitely need a towel, but the laughter is worth every drop. Some chores are better with a splashy sidekick.
